A flat mobile battery at dusk is annoying. A dark track to the campsite toilet, an unlit tent while cooking, or a power bank that cannot recharge before the next stop is worse. Good camping power and lighting is not about carrying the biggest battery or buying a complicated solar system. It is about covering the few jobs that make camp easier to navigate and more comfortable.

For most weekend campers, the starting point is modest: light around the tent, a way to charge a mobile, and perhaps enough stored power for a small USB device. Longer 4WD and caravan trips may need more planning, but the same rule applies: choose by use case, then check the limits before you buy.

Start with the jobs you need power to do

Before comparing capacities, lumens or panel sizes, write down what you actually want to run. A solar LED bulb for a tent or awning has a very different job from charging two phones, running a fridge or powering a camp oven. Treating them as the same category is where many camping setups become expensive and disappointing.

A simple overnight camp usually needs personal lighting and USB charging. A multi-day camp without access to mains power may benefit from a compact solar power bank, provided there is enough sun and time to recharge it. A caravan with a compressor fridge, water pump and 12V appliances is a larger electrical system. Portable starter gear can support small devices and lighting, but it is not a replacement for a properly sized battery, solar panel and charging setup.

That boundary matters. Clear product limits are more useful than big claims on a box.

A quick way to separate small and large loads

Think in two groups. Small loads include mobiles, headlamps, GPS units, Bluetooth speakers and solar LED bulbs. These are generally suited to USB power banks and compact solar charging products.

Large loads include fridges, kettles, induction cookers, coffee machines, electric blankets and high-output work lights. They draw far more energy, often for longer periods. If these are part of your plan, assess a dedicated 12V or 240V system rather than expecting a small power bank to carry the load.

Choose lighting before extra battery capacity

Light has an outsized effect on how a campsite feels. It helps you set up before dark, find gear in the ute or caravan boot, cook with better visibility and move around without waking everyone else. Yet brighter is not always better.

For walking, packing up and quick tasks, a headlamp keeps both hands free. For the tent, a small diffused lantern or solar LED bulb gives softer light that is easier on the eyes. Near an awning or camp kitchen, use enough light to see the bench and stove without turning the whole site into a floodlit work zone.

Warm white light is often more comfortable for winding down, while cool white can feel clearer for detailed tasks. Beam direction also matters. A light hung high and pointed down is usually more useful than a bright light sitting on a table and shining into faces.

Avoid leaving lights on all night simply because you can. Apart from wasting stored power, excessive light affects neighbouring campers and attracts insects. Put lighting where it solves a specific problem: the tent entrance, food area, clothesline, track to the loo or a dark corner around the vehicle.

Understand runtime without getting buried in jargon

Runtime depends on battery capacity, the power draw of the device and how the product is used. Actual runtime for a low-power LED bulb depends on the exact product, battery condition, selected mode and operating conditions. Charging a mobile, especially from a low battery level, uses considerably more stored energy. Running several devices at once reduces available runtime again.

Real conditions matter just as much as the numbers. Cold weather can reduce battery performance. Old cables can charge slowly. A phone used for maps, photos and streaming will need more power than one left mostly in airplane mode. If you need your mobile for navigation or emergency contact, do not plan around its best-case battery life.

For a weekend away, it is sensible to carry more charging capacity than your calculation suggests, but not so much that you are hauling unnecessary weight and cost. A power bank with documented capacity and suitable output, charged before departure, is often more useful than relying entirely on sunshine at camp.

Solar is a recharge option, not a guarantee

Portable solar is useful because it can extend a trip and reduce reliance on powered sites. It works best when expectations are realistic. Panel output changes with sunlight, shade, panel angle, cloud cover, heat and the time available to charge.

A compact foldable solar USB charger can top up compatible small USB devices in direct sunlight when the device, cable and charging conditions are suitable. It is not a fast substitute for a wall charger, particularly if the weather is poor or the panel spends most of the day inside a tent, under an awning or lying flat in partial shade.

Set solar gear in direct sun where it will not be stepped on, blown over or left unattended near a track. Reposition it as the sun moves if you need the best result. Keep the panel surface reasonably clean, and check that the cable and connector are securely seated before assuming a device is charging.

A more conservative approach is simple: arrive with your stored power full, use solar to recover some daytime use when conditions allow, and keep your energy needs modest. This gives you a useful buffer when a wet afternoon or dense tree cover limits charging.

Build your camping power and lighting kit by trip type

One or two nights in a tent

Keep it light and uncomplicated. A headlamp, a small tent light or solar LED bulb, and a charged USB power bank will suit many campers. Bring a short charging cable that matches your phone and test it before leaving. If you are driving to camp, charge everything in the vehicle on the way only if your vehicle charging setup is suitable and you are not relying on it to solve a nearly flat phone at the last minute.

4WD touring and remote stops

For a 4WD trip, lighting needs often spread beyond the tent. You may be setting up later, checking recovery gear, cooking beside the vehicle or finding equipment after dark. Use separate lights for personal movement and the camp area so one failure does not leave you in the dark.

Remote travel also calls for a more conservative power plan. Keep navigation and communication devices topped up first. Solar can help during longer stops, but driving conditions, shade and changing campsites can make charging unpredictable. Carry charged backup power rather than assuming each day will provide a full solar refill.

Caravan parks and off-grid nights

Caravan travellers often have access to a larger 12V system, but personal USB charging and portable lighting still make sense. They reduce the need to run leads into tents, annexes or around a site. For off-grid nights, identify which appliances are connected to the caravan battery and which can be handled separately with small portable gear.

This separation helps protect the main battery for priority loads. A small light or mobile charger should not create doubt about whether there is enough power left for the fridge, water pump or essential safety equipment.

Check compatibility before packing

Most frustrating camping power problems are ordinary compatibility problems. Check your device charging port, cable type and the output available from the power source. A USB-C cable does not automatically mean every device will charge at the same speed, and a supplied cable may not suit all phones or accessories in your household.

Also check how a light charges. Some solar LED bulbs include their own panel or cable, while others need a compatible USB source. Read the stated charging method, battery capacity and intended use. If a product is designed for lighting and small-device charging, do not expect it to run high-draw appliances.

Do a test pack at home. Charge the power bank, switch on each light, connect the cables and confirm that the solar panel can be positioned where you expect. Five minutes in the backyard is better than troubleshooting in rain after sunset.

Keep power safer around camp

Camping electronics do not need elaborate treatment, but they do need sensible handling. Keep batteries and connectors dry, avoid crushing cables in doors or under camp furniture, and do not leave power banks on a hot dashboard. Store loose cables in a small pouch so dirt and moisture do not end up in the connectors.

At night, place lights where they will not be kicked over or become a trip hazard. If children are around camp, keep charging gear away from water containers, cooking areas and tent entrances. Rechargeable gear is convenient, but it is still electrical equipment and deserves a dry, stable place.

The best setup is the one you understand before you leave. Start with lighting suited to ordinary movement around camp, stored power matched to your expected small-device loads, and solar as a helpful top-up rather than a promise. That is usually all it takes to make camp feel properly prepared after the sun goes down.
